Have a Listen: Midnight River

March 18, 2016

We're going on a trip. I'll bring the wine and that wicker picnic basket you found in a thrift store and gave me for my birthday. I'll drive. Most likely I won't be wearing any shoes, but probably you won't either. Let's roll down the windows and let the wind turn our cheeks pink and laugh at things that we haven't even said out loud. And you can make snow angels in the sand and I will flash the dolphins and our hair will look, crazy, crazy, like gypsies, like runaway jungle children. Let's take naps. And eat sandwiches cut into triangles and walk along the edge until our feet are soft again. And let's make wishes and throw them into the sea and send them to the people way on the other side, looking at the same water and waiting to hear a secret.

That will be our trip.

Fred Astaire: On Being Upside Down, Whenever Possible

March 14, 2016

I grew up in a big, airy house, with tall ceilings and an abundance of windows. To this day being in a small space with no natural light makes me feel a touch claustrophobic. This is somewhat problematic because I spend an average of three days a week working in a box office. (But I digress.)

There was a game I used to play as a child, by myself, that I called "walking on the ceiling." I would hold a mirror squarely between my hands, face up, peer into it, and walk.

That's it. It was incredibly simple.

The mirror, and my forward motion, was all I needed to defy gravity.

Fred Astaire took a different approach.

And so I'll share with you the following, something familiar (I hope!) but never tiresome, because every now and then we should lose, for a minute, our sense of up.

Also- last note I promise-- BUT:

“Everywhere that beauty goes, you are.”
— You're All The World To Me, Royal Wedding

SWOON. Enjoy.

Have a Look: Ralf Hildenbeutel

March 11, 2016

Hi hi hello. Ready for some beauty? So many good layers coming together in the below video it gives me the tingles. Approximately 1250 paintings on paper were hand drawn for DISCO by RALF HILDENBEUTEL, for the EP MOODS- RETOUCHED THEMES. Have a look, have a listen, and call me later.

Judy Garland: Having Emotions Doesn't Make You Crazy

March 07, 2016

Here is the thing.

For a long time, I have nonchalantly defended my emotional actions or reactions in this way:

"I know I know, but I'm a crazy person, so..."

It occurs to me that it's time to make an effort to stop. Because-- and this sounds cliche to me, but I'm going to indulge this thought for a second here, and it bears repeating since I certainly don't seem to have taken it to heart-- feeling something does not make you unstable, it makes you human. In fact, I think ignoring your emotions actually makes you crazy. If you believe that your emotions are tied to your instincts, and that your instincts are usually right, it might even make you stupid.

Also, "crazy" used this way is a cruel word, and one of these days I'm going to quit being so mean to myself. There are enough people out there ready to oblige, if I'm looking for some sly cruelty. Which I am not.

The fact is, expressing emotion can be beautiful. It can be a very brave thing.

Resulting in this theory: maybe, in our heart of hearts, we actually crave it. Otherwise why on earth do we go the movies? What even is "Netflix and chill" if not an excuse to wear sweatpants, eat in bed, and watch other people feel the things that we're afraid to feel ourselves?

All of that is to say that the following video is sticking with me, as is the fact that it was never aired because producers found it "too dark" leading me to question: when did it become taboo to care?

Have a Look: Adieu

March 04, 2016

This Friday has me watching some very interesting work from two French directors, known to me via the cyberspaces as the Jullien Brothers. Apparently one of them doubles as music artist The Coward, and the following is a music video for his song Adieu.

Here is the thing that I can't stop thinking about while watching: THAT CLOCK. Totally fascinating. Take a gander?

See more of their (admittedly, pretty strange-- but we love strange!) stuff here.

Inspiration Board: Screaming With An Inside Voice

March 01, 2016
all eyes on...
because, fringe.
free as a bird, far away.
screaming with an inside voice.
weeping.
too much fun at the party.

Have a Listen: Bonobo

February 26, 2016

If Mondays are old school, then Fridays are contemporary, and this Friday is dedicated to Bonobo, and the below track, which my ride or die roommate Katherine Roarty and I used in the fall of 2015 to make some sweet sweet moves for the Professional Semester students at Broadway Dance Center. The video is as good as the track, so consider this a teaser for the video of our work, coming later this month. Enjoy/express/engage yourself.
